Our Valentines

We didn't do too much on actual Valentine's Day. It was a day dedicated to our renovation project. My husband did get me some beautiful flowers that I put in a water pitcher (because I was too lazy to find a vase, but I'll pretend it's really because I'm artsy).

I eventually made Beer + Bacon Macaroni and cheese, recipe to come soon! and made AJ BBQ some chicken breast on the grill (in case I failed the mac and cheese recipe). I'm pretty sure I didn't need the chicken at all, AJ is now obsessed with the mac and cheese and can't wait until I make it again, he's already plotting different beers that we can experiment with.

Friday was the day we were actually going to celebrate Valentine's, we had a sitter for the entire day and decided to go to Milwaukee. Our go-to city for fun (and amazing restaurants).

First stop, the firing range! I had never shot a gun before in my life and I was so nervous about this. The first gun I shot had a huge kick or whatever you call it, and it was terrifying! I was pretty sure I would never fire another gun after that experience. Then AJ brought out his favorite gun, which was a lot bigger caliber (45 I think?). He convinced me that it was a lot easier to shoot and I tried it. It was so much better! I actually got a "kill shot" on the target! The shots way up in the right hand corner were the result of my husband saying that I could pull the trigger as fast as I wanted, I think I had a little too much fun with that and obviously a very bad aim. AJ is so excited that I not only fired hand guns, but I kind of liked it!

Then we went to the winery, we sampled 5 wines each and then bought 4 bottles for home, it was so hard to show some restraint. I'm pretty sure we could have easily bought 12+ bottles, it was all so good!

Then we headed to one of Milwaukee's malls, on the way we saw a Long John Silver's, AJ has never been there and I haven't for years. It's one of his co-workers favorite places, so we decided to split a meal, even though neither of us were actually hungry. That's totally us though, any time we're out and about it typically revolves around eating. It was pretty awesome for being fast food.

Once we got to the mall we bought a ton of clothes for Aliceana at The Children's Place and Gymboree. I had just gotten my Parents magazine and it had 20% off coupons for both stores so we ended up only spending $20 at The Children's Place on 2 pairs of pants and 4 shirts, and $11 at Gymboree for a pair of pants and 2 cute tops. That was pretty much a steal! Oh and we bought in 2 Toddler size, they're a little snug...on my 7 month old. Ugh.

After going to a couple more stores we ended up at the board game store, which always ends up being expensive for us. We love nerdy board games. Basically the second we walked in we saw something magical, an expansion to Castle Panic! Castle Panic is a frustrating game where you team up with your friends to defeat monsters. If we play with my husband, we're probably going to lose. He's so unlucky and always picks the cards that make us lose the game.

Then we went to Trader Joe's for the first time ever! I've heard about it so many times in the blog world, and knew that we had to check it out for ourselves since we're such foodies. So far we love everything we tried! this was our big haul. Habenero Sauce, General Tso stir fry sauce (so excited to try this!), cinnamon crumb coffee cake mix, cookie butter, dark chocolate bars, and inside out carrot cake cookies, we only spent about $14 which I don't think was too bad!  We are so obsessed with the cookie butter and the carrot cake cookies didn't last long at all, which is why they're pictured on a plate instead of the 2/3 empty package! I have a feeling we're going to have a lot of special trips to Trader Joe's in our future!

We were trying to kill as much time as possible at the mall until Mader's (our favorite fancy German restaurant) would start serving dinner at 4. Then I had an awesome idea, why not just go sit at the bar for half an hour and then have dinner. That way we could relax and enjoy the environment more and still get Aliceana in bed by her normal bedtime without having to rush. So we both had a drink at the Knight's bar. It was so peaceful, quiet German music in the background and so much beautiful art and many amazing swords adorning the walls. Then we went and sat down for dinner.

If you're following me on Twitter (which you should be! @thedomesticgeek) then you probably saw this tweet from me.

The chair I was sitting next to was sat in by Will Ferrell and had a plaque saying so, but AJ wouldn't let me take a picture. He said we would "get in trouble". It is a rather fancy restaurant, and you pay a small fortune for a meal, plus they have an art collection valued at over $3 million, so I guess I could see where he was coming from. I'm sad I don't have photographic evidence though, I wanted to show you guys!

Then we came home, got Aliceana to bed, and played with the new Castle Panic expansion we had bought.

AJ had to draw 12 monster tokens in one turn. We lost.

  1. I've always seen Trader Joes mentioned in the blogging world too but have never been to one. The only one I have seen is in Milwaukee.

    1. I'm sure that's the one we were at then! It seems kind of small for a grocery store, but they have a lot of unique items that we definitely had to try! I know Madison has one too, so I think we have another pit stop for after Aliceana's doctor appointments! haha

  2. Holy cow BEER BACON MAC N CHEESE?? I cannot wait for that recipe! Those are three of my fiancé's favorite things.

I've never played Castle Panic but it sounds like fun! We get all of our board games from Barnes & Noble because Fiancé is the kids and games manager- employee discount!! I'll have to see if he can order me one :)
